Question Category : Dengue
Dengue and DHF seems to be on the rise in colombo, Sri Lanka, where I live.I am concerend as several of my friends have been diagnosed with it. In the event of one's blood platelet count dropping drastically as a result of dengue, tranfusions seem to be the only treatment known in Colombo. I would be grateful if you could provide information on what alternative non blood treatment/medicine is avaiblable.

Question Category : Dengue
Dear Doctor My 2 and 1/2 year old granddaughter is living in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She was recently diagnosed with Dengue fever. (Dengue fever is apparently going around Brazil currently, especially in Rio). All the correspondence from the doctors was in Portuguese, and her parents had to rely on 3rd hand information with the translation. She had high fevers for about 8 days (between 38 and 41), alternately going hot and cold, coughing, and ear-ache, and according to the Xrays, spots on the lungs which one doctor said could be bronchial or pneumonia. Her symptoms were typically flu symptoms, but the fever was ongoing. She is now better, the only treatment that we gave her was Tylenol for fever, and homeopathic granules for ear/nose/throat infections. However, she did not have any noticeable rash on her body (which I have read is one of the symptoms), except for a fine (we assume) heat rash as it was very hot and humid in Rio in February. How do we know which strain of Dengue fever that she had? She had blood tests done, would the results tell us this? She seems to be active and healthy now, but do we have to watch for any symptoms? I read that the liver could also be affected? Do we need to have any tests done to check on this? Does she need to have further blood test to show the all clear? Please advise.
