Question Category : ADHD
I have a son that will be 7 years old in July. Prior to him entering the first grade at a new school, he had no major diffculty with behavior (no more than the average 6 year old male). But during the school year, he did seem to have difficulty with his focus. One teacher in particular, continually suggests that he may be ADD. I have done research, including talking to other parents and our pediatrician. My personal conclusion is that he is being an average child. My question is, is there a way to confirm ADD or determine if he has some sort of "chemical inbalance" thru blood and or urine - not based on psychological analyzation.

My son is having great difficulty with behavior in school. He has been found to have above average to high average intelligence, but it is lost with his behavior and defiance. He frequently get detentions, causing him to miss recess time and classes that he likes. I am encouraging the school to stop the detentions -- he is there frequently and it is devastating to his self- esteem. What better consequences are there when he has misbehaved? I'm thinking acknowledging the behavior, having him acknowledge it and apologize for the actions and move on, get him to refocus on something new that is positive. This punitive approach is not working. He is ADHD and possibly bi-polar.

I recently read about a lady whose son was diagnosed with ADHD. He seemed to have deeper issues than this alone so she researched and discovered another disorder very similar to ADHD. I saved the article but cannot locate it. I would be interested in any info. I believe the disorder wasn't rare but wasn't diagnosed as often.
