Question
what are the recent guidelines for blood transfusion in seriously ill patients specifically Hb level and platelet count and TLC
Answer
The American association of blood banks recommendations regarding the hemoglobin threshold for transfusion, namely, a hemoglobin of 80 g/L or less in cases of chronic symptomatic anemia or anemia due to chemotherapy and a hemoglobin of 130 g/L or less in cases of severe cardiopulmonary disease. These studies and recommendations highlight the wide range of tissue oxygen demands in different subgroups of critically ill children and the lack of standardized criteria to guide pediatric intensive care specialists regarding blood transfusion.
